In March of 2021, a fire broke out in the south eastern portion of the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Thanks to the efforts of the L.A. Fire Department, the fire was put out with no harm to surrounding property. Join California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with Friends of Ballona Wetlands, to restore the burn area through the removal of invasive pampas grass and other non-native invasive species.
Meet at the Playa Vista Sports Park at 13196 Bluff Creek Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90094 - the group will gather at the picnic benches next to the bathrooms. Parking available on Bluff Creek or in the park parking lot. Please be sure to arrive on time as we'll be walking to the restoration site across the street promptly at 9am. This event is restricted to a very small number of volunteers, so please only register if you can attend.
Registration: Registration is required. You must also sign the digital waiver and watch the instructional safety video before the event.
Ages: Activities are recommended for ages 7 and up. Youths 16 and under should be accompanied by an adult.
What to wear: Close-toed shoes are required! We recommend dressing in weather-appropriate layers that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty, along with a hat. Long pants are also recommended to protect against occasional prickly plants.
What to bring: Gardening gloves and a full water bottle to stay hydrated. There are no water fountains on site. We will provide all other tools and supplies.
Arrive on time: The ecological reserve gates are locked during all events and late arrivals will find themselves locked out.
Covid-19 Protocols: We recommend that unvaccinated volunteers wear a mask.
Cancellations: For safety, we must cancel if it’s raining. Please check the weather before arriving. If you’re not sure, please call us or check our social media for cancellation announcements.
Donations: The suggested donation is $5 per person. By donating online or at our events, you can keep helping with restoration even after you leave! Free tours and restoration events are made possible by the efforts and donations of kindhearted people just like you.
