Butterflies, Birds and Ballona: Wetlands ‘friends’ teach children about the environment
Last week, the Friends Manager of Environmental Education, Carolyn Everhart, and Manager of Communications and Community Engagement, Alexis Elias, were interviewed by Morgan Owen from the Argonaut to highlight the Friends educational program, Explore Ballona!, and public programs offered to the community.
The Explore Ballona! educational program engages with thousands of students annually and is offered all year long for students from kindergarten through high school. Programs offered are field trips to the wetlands, pre and post-lessons for each field trip, E.C.O. Quest, and summer camp.
“It’s a great hands-on learning experience where students get to use binoculars, magnifying glasses, and geoscience tools, Everhart said — and for many kids, this is one of the only times they get to be in a wide-open space.”
